Lisbon Day 1! Pass the pasteis!

Ok Lisbon is so cute! So many pastels and pretty purple flower trees. Our first stop today as a group was to get Pasteis de Nata, which Lisbon is famous for. It is the most delicious egg custard tart you will ever have in your life. You sprinkle cinnamon and powdered sugar on top of them, and the crust is soo flaky and crispy. You need to go to Portugal just to try one - you will not be disappointed! We also had fresh squeezed orange juice and it was basically heaven. We got them at the place that has the original recipe, which they keep locked up in a safe, so they were extra extra good, but they have them all over Portugal and you can't really go wrong.

Then we headed to a monastery nearby (where the pasteis was invented!) and waited an hour and a half to see the courtyard, which was not worth it tbh. It was very beautiful, don't get me wrong, but the line took ages haha.

The Dean of the BYU College of Humanities was in Portugal this week and he invited us to a seafood banquet at Portugalia. I was going to try and power through it, but when they brought out the platter... I couldn't do it. The crab eyes were STARING at me! I did try some of the dip and I even ate some clams which I actually didn't mind! Probably because they were covered in garlic butter and cilantro. After the seafood, they brought out a second course of steak... drowned in butter. If you look at the picture, that is ALL butter. It was insane and I was a little bit icked out but the steak was pretty good. My favorite part had to be the bread at the beginning because they had this delicious herb butter. Yum!

Right outside the restaurant was the Descubridores monument (read my blog post to learn more) and a beautiful ocean view. I love the ocean!

After sitting at the ocean for a while, we headed to Santini's, which is a famous gelato place in Portugal. I got raspberry and chocolate which were both really good (raspberry especially tasted like you were eating raspberries fresh off the bush), but nothing compares to Gioelia.

After gelato we headed to an immersive museum called Quake, which was really really cool. Lisbon had a huge earthquake in the 1700s that pretty much destroyed the city. There was a ton of destruction, fires, and then right after the earthquake a huge tsunami hit. You went room through room and there were interactive activities. The first room was like an introduction and there was a guy who told you that you needed to go through a time machine back to the 1700s where the earthquake happened, but you needed to prepare yourself first. So then we went to a room to learn about earthquakes, then a room with an earthquake simulator, and then to a time machine! After the time machine room it felt like we were in a disneyland world almost, it was crazy. The earthquake happened while everyone was in mass, so they had us in these seats watching a mass ceremony and then the chairs shook when the "earthquake" happened. Super cool experience!

Professor Pratt really wanted us to go to this coach museum after quake, so we headed over there. To a museum that was just full of coaches. Some of them were pretty cool but most of us just thought it was funny that there's a coach museum. At 7:30pm we finally got home. Marie and I went to the grocery store and then went back home and crashed in bed (after making a very special purchase... iykyk). Long day today!
